Your MRI Exam

Your MRI exam will usually take between 30-60 minutes, depending on the type of exam performed. During your exam, you will be positioned on a cushioned table at the center of the MRI unit. The MRI machine is open at both ends, allowing for light and air circulation.

It is very important that you lie as still as possible while the images are being taken—movement will blur the images just as it does during photography. For certain studies, the injection of a contrast medium may be necessary to better visualize specific body structures.

The MRI technologist will be able to see you at all times and can speak with you through a two-way intercom. A call button that you hold in your hand will allow you to signal the technologist at any time.

Will I Feel Anything?

No, you will feel nothing. The exam is safe and painless. During your exam, you will hear repetitive knocking or thumping sounds. This is the normal sound the MRI unit makes while acquiring the images. For your comfort, we offer ear plugs or headphones with your choice of radio or music. If you prefer, you may bring your own music such as an iPod or CD.
