3 Tesla MRI
Merrimack Valley MRI’s installation of a 3 Tesla MRI reflects our continued commitment to provide cutting edge technology to assist referring physicians in meeting their patients’ needs. We have found that the 3 Tesla MRI can do everything a 1.5 Tesla system can do, only faster and better, with significantly improved resolution.
MRI systems are measured in terms of their magnet’s “field strength”, in units known as “Tesla”. 3 Tesla systems represent the most advanced and most powerful MRI equipment presently available for clinical use. The extra power of 3 T provides clinicians with high-definition images, combined with software packages aimed at specific clinical issues, helping clinicians solve the most challenging patient needs. 3 Tesla MRI offers a number of specific benefits:
- The power of 3T permits scans to be completed more quickly than in the past, ensuring greater patient convenience and comfort.
- Special software on the 3T, known as PROPELLER, can correct for patient motion within the scanner, so that young children who may have trouble staying still, or patients wits involuntary motion due to movement disorders, can be scanned in one visit, without sedation or anesthesia.
- 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. 3 Tesla breast MRI is an important tool in early detection of cancer and examination of extent of disease. Our GE 3 Tesla MRI has a special “couch” that permits patients to lie down in comfort during the study. Moreover, both breasts can be examined simultaneously in one exam during one visit, increasing patient convenience.
- 3T MRI represents a gold standard for high-definition orthopedic studies, showing the spine, knees, shoulder, and other areas of interest in superb detail. The high resolution of 3 Tesla images can make a difference in determining the best course of action, whether it is surgery or another approach.
- The power of 3T permits fast and easy studies known as fMRI, or “functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This technique is useful for pre-surgical “brain mapping”, allowing enabling the surgeon to see the location of speech and motor centers within the brain so that they can be avoided during surgery.
- State-of-the-art neurological exams for a variety of clinical areas, including examination of stroke, back/disc disease, and movement disorders such as MS and Parkinson’s Disease.
