Preparing for an MRI
You will need to do a few simple things to prepare for your MRI exam. When you arrive for your MRI, please check in with the receptionist.
Here are a few important things to be aware of:
- For most MRI exams you may eat, drink, and take any prescription medications as usual. We will advise you if your exam requires anything different from your normal routine.
- Bring your insurance card and information with you to the exam.
- Bring any previous diagnostic films such as x-rays, CT scans, and other MRIs.
- Since belts, zippers, and even thread in fabrics may contain metal that will interfere with and distort the MRI images, you will be asked to change into a patient gown for your exam.
- Do not wear any makeup since some products may contain metallic particles.
- Leave your valuables at home. No metallic items, such as jewelry, watches, keys, etc., can be brought into the MRI exam area. Lockers are available in the exam area for safekeeping of items if needed.
